Krav Maga gives you the tools from the first class to defend yourself and yes there are people who have used Krav Maga successfully in Self Defense street situations after only a few classes of training…
To give you an answer that would be optimal for the average person to defend themselves with Krav Maga if training twice a week I see people self defense fighting skills starting to get good depending on the person, between 9 months – 18 months of regular training in Krav Maga but remember you are give self defense tools to defend yourself from your first Krav Maga class and in my personal experience in real world self defense situations I only use 2 or 3 basic strikes which for me have saved me in quite a few real life self defense situations where I had to use krav maga to protect myself.

most of the techniques of Krav Maga are basic, and most effective. Thing with Martial Arts is that you can never learn enough it’s a life long thing that you keep learning and learning. Say you train for 5 years and become a very good fighter, and then quit training you wont be as good as people who have been training less, but continue to keep training.
